Marlins test certificate
download, verification and validity

The certificate is printed or downloaded as a PDF by whoever administered your test — you, your company or the test centre. Anyone can check it on marlinstests.com with its licence code, and it shows the test date but no expiry date: how old a result your employer accepts is up to them.

01How you get your result

There is no exam board to wait for. The test is marked by the platform, and the result exists the moment the candidate clicks Finish on the last screen — Marlins warns that if you close the test without that click, your results are not recorded (source). So before you leave the room or the webcam, make sure you saw the Finish screen.

The result is a percentage, not a pass or a fail. The final score is calculated as an overall percentage (source), and the overall figure is your points over the points of the whole test, not an average of the sections (source). Whether it is enough is decided by the company or flag state that asked for it (source). For the minimum Marlins recommends for your rank, see the Marlins test by rank.

"Marlins result check": there is no public search by name or by passport number. What exists is the certificate check described below, which needs the licence code printed on the certificate. If you do not have the certificate yet, ask whoever administered the test — that is the next section.

02Downloading the certificate, or getting a lost one back

The certificate is printed by the test administrator: the print option appears right after the candidate clicks Finish. If it was skipped, the administrator can still download it as a PDF from "Results & Certificates" in the Test Administration Panel, searching by test type and date (source). Who that administrator is depends on who bought your test (source):

You took the test…To get the certificate again
With a licence you bought yourselfLog in at marlinstests.com, open "Results & certificates", find the test and print it again — at any time.
Paid for by your company or manning agentAsk them: they hold a copy and can send it to you. Marlins' article also gives a support address to write to with the licence code, your full name and your seaman's book number.
At a Marlins Approved Test CentreContact the centre. It has to stamp, sign and reissue the certificate itself.

A lost paper is therefore no reason to sit the test again — the record stays on the platform. One thing cannot be fixed afterwards: your name. Marlins asks candidates to take care with the personal details typed before the test, because spelling mistakes cannot be corrected once the test has started (source). Copy your name exactly as it is in your passport and seaman's book.

03The three kinds of Marlins certificate

The questions are the same; what differs is who watched you take the test, and that is printed on the certificate. The three types apply to the Seafarers, the Cruise Ship Staff and the Offshore Workers tests (source).

Approved Test Centre

Taken at a centre inspected by Marlins, under supervision for the whole test. Name and score sit over a unique watermark with your details, the navy blue Marlins ATC logo appears only on this format, and there is room for the administrator's stamp, date and signature; the "Company" line reads "Approved Test Centre". Marlins says companies recruiting through third-party manning agencies should accept only this format. source

AI proctored

Taken anywhere over a webcam, after showing photo ID, recorded throughout; the AI flags warning signs and someone in the buying company reviews the recording before the certificate is generated. Only a company can buy it, and the certificate carries a pale blue "AI Proctored" stamp. source source

Standard

Bought and taken by anyone who registers on marlinstests.com, with no supervision and no ID check. Flag state authorities such as the UK MCA and some companies do not accept it; Marlins describes it as possibly enough for a company's internal use. source

If an agency or a company sent you, it will tell you which one it needs — usually by booking the test for you. If you are paying yourself, ask before you buy: a standard certificate you bought online may not be the one they accept. Prices and how to book are in what the Marlins test costs and how to book it.

04Verifying a Marlins certificate (for employers and agencies)

Free, online, with no account (source):

  1. Open www.marlinstests.com and find "Check certificate validity", about halfway down the home page.
  2. Type the licence code printed on the certificate: 16 or 20 letters and numbers, without spaces or dashes, and every zero as the number 0, not the letter O.
  3. Click Verify. Two green ticks: issued by an Approved Test Centre. One tick: taken on Marlins' system but not at an approved centre, so Marlins has not inspected the exam conditions.
  4. Compare every detail on the paper with the record on screen. Marlins warns that one wrong digit — in the overall score, for example — can mean the certificate was altered.
  5. Any other response means the certificate is not valid. Check the code for a typo first; if it still fails, contact Marlins, which investigates where necessary.

Seafarers: give your employer the licence code together with the certificate. It is what lets them check it in a minute instead of asking you to sit the test again.

05Validity and expiry: how long a certificate counts

A Marlins certificate shows the date the test was taken and no expiry date. Marlins leaves it to companies and flag state authorities to decide how often a seafarer must be retested, and, when they ask for guidance, suggests accepting a certificate for 4 or 5 years after the test date, because English ability can change over time (source).

So "my Marlins expired" really means "my company no longer accepts a result this old". The two-year limit you see on some agency pages is that agency's policy, not a Marlins rule — and if it is your agency, it is the rule you have to meet. Ask before you renew. Retake rules and the licence's own 12-month validity are explained in cost, booking and validity.

06Retesting? Practise the sections that cost you points

A new certificate means a new licence, paid for again, so make the next attempt count. Start with a free practice test, count your mistakes by section, and read how to pass the Marlins test. Our bank has 2,464 questions, 510 of them recorded, with a timed simulation scored section by section.

07Questions about the certificate

How do I download my Marlins certificate?

The test administrator prints it right after you click Finish, or downloads it later as a PDF from "Results & Certificates" in the Test Administration Panel. If you bought the test yourself, you are the administrator: log in at marlinstests.com and open "Results & certificates". If your company or manning agent bought it, ask them; if you sat it at an Approved Test Centre, the centre reissues it with its stamp and signature.

How do I check my Marlins result online?

There is no search by name. On the marlinstests.com home page, "Check certificate validity" takes the licence code printed on the certificate (16 or 20 letters and numbers) and shows the record. Without the code, ask whoever administered your test.

Does the Marlins certificate expire?

No expiry date is printed on it, only the date of the test. Each company or flag state decides how old a result it accepts; when asked, Marlins suggests 4 or 5 years.

What do one tick and two green ticks mean?

Two green ticks: the certificate was issued by a Marlins Approved Test Centre. One tick: the test was taken on Marlins' system but not at an approved centre, so Marlins has not inspected the exam conditions. Any other response means the certificate is not valid.

Is a certificate from an online test accepted?

It depends on the type. An AI-proctored certificate (bought by a company, webcam with photo ID, reviewed before it is generated) carries an "AI Proctored" stamp. A standard certificate from an unsupervised test is not accepted by flag states such as the UK MCA and by some companies. Ask the company that wants it before you buy.

My name is misspelled on the certificate. Can it be corrected?

Marlins says spelling mistakes in the personal details cannot be corrected once the test has started. Contact whoever administered the test to ask what can be done, and next time copy your name exactly as in your passport before you start.

Does the certificate say pass or fail?

No. It reports a percentage. Marlins says the company or flag state decides whether the score is enough, and publishes recommended minimums by rank, from the entry ranks to the master.
