Marlins practice test 3
the same weighting the real test uses.

Every test in this series is built the way the real one is weighted — most of it grammar and vocabulary, listening first, and a question on times or numbers near the end. Test 3 keeps that shape with ten fresh questions. There is no pass mark in the Marlins test: what matters is the percentage your employer asks for.

02Answers and explanations

The answer to every question above, and why the other options are not it.

Q1 — Listening

A · fifteen

You hear 'in fifteen minutes'. In fifteen the stress falls on the second syllable (fif-TEEN, long vowel); in fifty it falls on the first (FIF-ty) and the word ends in a short vowel.

Transcript: The agent said the pilot boat will be alongside in fifteen minutes.

Q2 — Grammar

B · have been conducting

'Since this morning' marks an action that began in the past and continues: present perfect continuous, 'have been conducting'. 'Are conduct' is not a valid form (it would be 'are conducting') and the other two are future or conditional.

Q3 — Grammar

A · The Chief Engineer, who joined in Rotterdam, has twenty years of experience.

In a non-defining relative clause (between commas) about a person English uses 'who'. 'That' is not allowed between commas, 'which' is for things and 'whom' only works as an object.

Q4 — Grammar

B · by the time

'By the time' shows that something will be finished before that moment, so it fits the future perfect 'will have finished'. 'Until' expresses a continuous period and does not fit a finished action.

Q5 — Vocabulary

B · Crankshaft

The 'rainwater catcher', the 'first aid kit' and the 'fishing tackle' are part of a lifeboat's survival equipment under SOLAS: collecting water, first aid and fishing. The 'crankshaft' belongs to an engine.

Q6 — Listening

D · list

You hear 'The vessel has a list to starboard'. 'List' begins with /l/ and has the short /ɪ/; 'last' has the long /ɑː/, 'mist' begins with /m/ and 'wrist' with /r/, because the initial w is silent.

Transcript: The vessel has a list to starboard after the ballast transfer.

Q7 — Vocabulary

A · ullage

'Ullage' is the empty space between the surface of a liquid and the top of a tank, a measurement and not a material; dunnage, turnbuckles and lashing wires are used to hold and protect the cargo.

Q8 — Vocabulary

A · on-board training so a newcomer learns the ship, the alarms and his duties

'Familiarisation' is training on board so that a newcomer learns the ship, the alarms and his duties. The basic safety training certificate is a different thing, obtained before joining.

Q9 — Time and numbers

D · 400 tonnes

If three quarters have been pumped out, one quarter is left: 1,600 ÷ 4 = 400 t. 1,200 t is what has already been discharged (3/4 of 1,600), not what remains on board.

Q10 — Grammar

D · is tested

The engine does not do the test, it receives it, and the sentence is about something that is repeated ('every week'), so the present simple passive 'is tested' is used. 'tests', 'is testing' and 'has tested' are active forms: they would mean that the engine tests something.

03The other practice tests

Six free tests, sixty questions, none repeated. They are ours, written in the format of the Marlins test.

04After the free tests

The real test is 85 questions in 60 minutes and the result is a percentage, with no pass mark — the score you need is the one your employer asks for. Nauti Test Pro has 2,314 questions in that format, 510 of them recorded, and a timed simulation with the weighting Marlins publishes, scored section by section against the minimum recommended for your rank.
