02Answers and explanations
The answer to every question above, and why the other options are not it.

You hear 'The reef is two miles to the south'. 'Reef' has the long /iː/; 'riff' has the short /ɪ/, 'ref' the vowel /e/ and 'roof' the /uː/.
Transcript: The reef is two miles to the south of our present position.
Q2 — Grammar

After 'require', 'demand' or 'insist' plus 'that', English uses the subjunctive, the base form of the verb: 'require that all vessels be fitted'. 'To be' cannot follow 'that' plus a subject, and 'were' and 'being' do not belong to this structure.

After 'It's the first time' English uses the present perfect: 'I have worked'. 'Am working' is a common mistake when translating from other languages.

The 'gangway' is the portable walkway that connects the ship to the quay for going ashore and coming aboard (SMCP: 'rig the gangway'). Passages inside the ship are called 'alleyways' or 'passageways'.

The motorman said number four cylinder had risen 'to four hundred and thirty degrees': 430 °C. 390 is the temperature of the others; 413 and 340 transpose digits or confuse thirteen/thirty.

'Fouled' means dirty or blocked, for example with marine growth, so the cooler cannot exchange heat. 'Flushed' means washed through with water, which is the cure, not the problem.

'Overlanded' means more cargo was discharged than the manifest shows. 'Short-landed' is the opposite: less was discharged.

In the SMCP the figures are said separately and the decimal with 'decimal': '18.5 knots' is 'one eight decimal five knots'. The unit is added; 'point' and 'and a half' are not used on the radio.

The comparative of 'hard' is 'harder'. 'more hard' is not used because 'hard' is a short word, and 'hardly' means almost not, not with a lot of effort, so 'more hardly' is also wrong.
